GAME FILE 104 · MULTIPLATFORM
Grand Theft Auto V is an open world action adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is set in Los Santos and Blaine County, a fictional take on Southern California, and follows three playable protagonists: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Few games have been re-released on as many hardware generations, which makes it a good example of why a single game can need several entries in a tracking list.

If you track your library by platform, these count as four different purchases of what is, in story terms, the same game. Most trackers handle this in one of two ways: one entry with several platforms attached, or one entry per platform with a note that they share progress or not. Pick one approach and stick to it. The guide on reading a game database entry covers the trade offs.
Story mode and GTA Online
The game has two halves. The story mode is a single player campaign that switches between the three protagonists, with heists as the set pieces. GTA Online is a separate persistent multiplayer mode that launched two weeks after the game and has been updated for years since. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar also sells GTA Online as a standalone purchase, so check which one you actually own before you mark it in a list.
For tracking purposes it helps to treat them as two lines: the campaign has a clear finish, while GTA Online does not. Marking GTA V as finished after the credits is fair, and keeping GTA Online in a separate "ongoing" status keeps your list honest.
Recording and sharing your sessions
GTA V is one of the most recorded games on YouTube and in short video feeds, largely because so many unplanned things happen in it: chases that go wrong, physics accidents, heists that fall apart at the last second. On PC, the Rockstar Editor lets you capture and edit clips inside the game. On consoles, the system's own capture tools record the last few minutes of play.
If you record long sessions and want the best moments without scrubbing through hours of footage, an AI clipping tool can do the first pass. ViceForge, from the team behind this site, has a GTA game profile in its AI Gaming mode that looks for action, chases, crashes and big reactions, and exports clips in vertical or horizontal format with captions added automatically. The guide on recording and clipping your best moments explains the whole workflow, with or without it.
What comes next: GTA VI
Rockstar's next entry, Grand Theft Auto VI, returns to Vice City and the state of Leonida. As of October 2026 it is dated for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, after two earlier delays. Check Rockstar's official GTA VI page for the current date before you plan around it. The full history of the series, with every main release, is in the Grand Theft Auto series timeline.
